3 Essential Mobility Upgrades if You Want to Age in Place

While there is something to be said about the amenities and laidback lifestyle of retirement communities, studies suggest that most people actually prefer to age in their own homes. In fact, nearly 90% of adults over the age of 50 want to remain at home or at the home of close relatives. If you belong to this vast majority, however, you will need these three essential upgrades.

1. Shower and Bathtub Modifications

If you are a senior that is choosing to age-in-place safely and comfortably, you should plan for important bathroom modifications. One popular option is to replace your existing tub with a walk-in shower, which provides much easier and safer access. If you are fond of long baths, however, you may also consider upgrading to a walk-in bathtub with the necessary safety features.

2. Kitchen Modifications

As you age, you may find that your appliances are no longer as easy to access as they used to be, and cabinetry and countertops are too high – this is especially true if you are in a wheelchair. You will need to have them lowered. Microwaves below counter height, shallow sinks and pullout pantries are also recommended modifications.

3. Assistive Technology

In addition to other traditional modifications, you may opt to use assistive technology to make life a bit easier. Home monitoring and medical alert systems, smart lighting, plugs with timers and all sorts of useful gadgets can all contribute to a higher quality of life and less dependence on the kindness of others.
