When vetting home remodeling contractors, homeowners usually perform background checks on their prospects. They meet them in person or over video conference calls, check out their online portfolio and reviews, and ask previous clients about their experiences with them.
If you are planning to remodel an area of your home, these may be enough to help you decide which remodeler to choose. However, putting in extra effort in this phase of the process before signing the contract would be worth considering. In particular, you can ask a prospective contractor if you can see the latest completed project.
Seeing Everything for Yourself
A prospect’s online portfolio filled with images of completed bathroom or kitchen remodeling projects only shows so much. It’d be more sensible if you can experience the space for yourself – with the permission of the homeowner, of course. A thorough look at the overall design of the space as well as the placement of the materials within allows you to gauge the prospect’s quality of work and whether it is on par with your expectations.
Finding the Right Contractor
To assess your prospective contractor’s quality of work, take note of what you need to look for when it comes to materials and components:
- Paint – Use your hands to touch the painted walls and feel for any inconsistencies like rough patches and drip marks. If you don’t feel any of these, then the contractor performed a decent paint job.
- Tile – A good tile installation doesn’t have tile patches that jut out or cave in – all the tiles are square and level, with evenly sized and consistently thin grout lines.
- Countertop – A properly installed countertop doesn’t have odd gaps or seams, which indicate the remodeler diligently followed the “measure twice, cut once” rule.
There is no harm in asking to see a prospective contractor’s finished work. Taking this step helps you determine if the pros are worth hiring and are someone you can rely on to perform high-quality home remodeling.
