Tips on Practicing Sustainability in Your Home Remodel

Given that building and renovation projects generate a large amount of waste, sustainability is now becoming a key feature of building and renovation projects. In today’s post, Design Build Remodeling Group of Maryland shares tips on incorporating sustainability practices into your home remodel.

Choose Sustainable Materials

Sustainable building materials are not limited to recycled or repurposed pieces. Instead, look for one or more of the following features:

  • Natural. Synthetic materials are plentiful, but most of them are not biodegradable and can linger in landfills for a long time. Wood remains the most sustainable natural construction material because it’s biodegradable, has a long life span when treated properly, and is harvested from forests protected by conservation efforts.
  • Renewable. In addition to wood, infinitely recyclable materials like iron, aluminum and asphalt can be put in the same category, as they help reduce the resources that would have been otherwise spent on mining and extraction.
  • Harmless. Some types of materials emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for a long time after they’re used for construction. When choosing materials for your home remodel, make it a point to check the material’s material safety data sheet (MSDS), which should list information about potential VOCs.

Install Energy-Efficient Appliances

Appliances have become an essential part of modern life that it’s hard to avoid not replacing appliances in a remodel. It is possible to maintain sustainability while enjoying the benefits of having appliances in your home — by choosing energy-efficient appliances. Fortunately, you won’t have to scour every spec sheet to identify the right appliances. All you need to do is look for the ENERGY STAR® certification label.

Optimize Your Home for Natural Lighting

A well-designed space should allow maximum use of natural light. The less your home relies on artificial daytime lighting, the more eco-friendly it becomes. Windows, skylights and patio doors are the best ways to allow natural light into your home, while solar tubes are likewise effective in areas where the three won’t fit. Natural lighting also has health benefits, related to promoting natural sleep cycles, that should not be overlooked.
