Where Do I Start with a Whole-House Renovation?

Home renovation can start simple. But, once you finish a quick bathroom remodel, you may find yourself wishing you could enjoy a fresh look throughout your house. If you’ve started looking for new wood floors, or you find yourself devouring home improvement magazines, consider a whole-house renovation.

While a whole-house renovation is quite a different matter than a simple one-room remodel, it starts with a dream. To begin, you come up with a vision for how well a room could function, and then you take your ideas to the professionals.

Once you’ve explained your ideas to a professional home remodeling contractor, they can help you through the planning process by choosing materials and designing your renovated space.

As you plan your whole-house renovation, the beginning stages will look a bit like this:

  • Having a vision. Your home should be uniquely yours, and every room should be functional and demonstrate your inimitable sense of style. Once you have a vision, you’re halfway to creating your dream home.
  • Choosing a contractor. This is where you take your vision and bring it to life. From experience, contractor will be able to tell you what can work and what may not work from a realistic point of view. They will walk you through the steps of the remodeling process and help create a budget that is feasible.
  • Approving a design. Once you figure out your budget and your style, it’s time to design. Many contractors double as designers, often known as design/build firms, and can pull together a detailed set of drawings and schedules that clearly explains the project. Once the designers create a floorplan you love, it’s on to construction.

Once you’ve approved your design, chosen your materials, and signed off on the budget, your contractor will begin work. As a homeowner, all you have to is sit back and relax until construction is complete. While your project manager will check in with updates from your house, there isn’t a lot you will need to worry about until the final walk-through.
