Secondary Suites Within the Main Home
For large enough homes, the secondary suite can either be on the main floor of the residential building or above it. For homes with two floors, either floor can serve as your principal dwelling, and the rest can be remodeled as a guest home. It’s also not uncommon to see basement guest houses, provided you already have an existing basement.
Garage Suites
Our home remodeling contractors categorize garage suite guest housing as either “at grade” or “above grade”. “At grade” means that you can have the secondary suite attached on the main level of a detached garage. “Above grade” means the suite will serve as a second floor to the garage. Sometimes, you can also see the secondary suite attached to the main building, but this would no longer qualify it as a garage suite, but as an attached suite instead.
Garden Suites
Garden suites are commonly built at grade. This is perhaps the best home addition to have, albeit also the most expensive. These suites are built as a detached single unit dwelling that stands alone in the garden or the backyard.
